Lesson objective: Solve real-world problems involving division by a unit fraction.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of dividing by a unit fraction to a real-world situation. Students are asked to determine how many loads of laundry can be washed using liquid detergent and softener given certain measuring cups.

Key Concept students will use:

  • The meaning of measurement division problems is the same regardless of the numbers used.

Skills students will use:

  • understanding dividing a whole number by a unit fraction (Grade 5, Unit 8)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they look for more efficient strategies to divide by a unit fraction by recognizing the structure of whole numbers composed of unit fractions.

Key vocabulary:

  • division
  • unit fraction
