This lesson focuses on using specific details from a text in order to make a valid inference about the text's central idea. The day begins by rereading the section of the text about the Obsidian Cliff (on page 15). Students are asked to reread the inset text and examine the accompanying visual before exploring the text-dependent questions. Students may work in small groups or with partners as they return to the text to explore these questions and capture their thinking on the student guided notes sheet. The focus question should be completed independently.
