This lesson focuses on guiding students to understand the purpose of the legend, including the reason why the Cherokee people told this story. By carefully examining the setting of the narrative and evidence about how the characters are affected by their actions, readers will be better able to understand the author's purpose. This lesson will prepare students to identify the theme of the text in the culminating writing task on Day 5. Special Materials: *Student guided notes sheet *Copy of the anchor text for each student
