This culminating writing task is an opportunity for students to connect their thinking from all the close reading they have done across the week. They will be asked to find evidence to support the author's point of view about The Statue of Liberty. Students will do this independently through a written response, building on the skills they have mastered all week. Students will describe the different craft moves Emma Lazarus uses to reveal her point of view of the Statue of Liberty's status as a symbol of freedom for immigrants.
Special Materials:
Individual copies of "The New Colossus" for each student, pencils for annotating, images of The Colossus of Rhodes and The Statue of Liberty, copy of focus question for each student.
