This lesson focuses on finding evidence in the text to develop an understanding that the subject of the poem is The Statue of Liberty. This is the first lesson in a five day unit using "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. In this lesson, students receive support and opportunities to make inferences about the subject of the poem: The Statue of Liberty. Students will practice using background knowledge and specific phrases from the text to support the idea that "The New Colossus" is written about the Statue of Liberty.
