This lesson focuses on how Poe uses mood and tone to create suspense in "The Tell-Tale Heart". Students will be analyzing how word choice creates tone and mood. The day begins with the students determining the mood and tone of "The Tell-Tale Heart." Paragraphs one and two provide insight into the tone of the narrator and paragraphs six and seven provide insight into the mood created by the author. Students can work independently or in pairs as they list words in the text that help to describe the mood and tone. Lastly, students compare mood and tone see how mood and tone conflict to create tension. In this lesson, students take their first steps toward understanding that suspense is created through tension. Special Materials: Students should have access to the following materials for this lesson: * Student guided notes sheet * Copies of the anchor text for all students
