The purpose of Day 3’s lesson is to teach students how to pay attention to and analyze an author’s use of symbolism and metaphor. Students will consider how an author’s use of specific symbols and metaphors helps to further develop and support themes in a poem. This will contribute to the student’s understanding of the meaning of the poem as he/she works towards the ultimate goal (Day Five) of discussing how two themes interact with and build upon one another.
