The purpose of the Day One lesson is to get students thinking about the figurative meaning of the poem. Students will need to pay attention to specific words and phrases in the poem in order to examine the way the author is using personification. They will use this knowledge to help them infer a theme that is developing in the poem before working towards the ultimate goal (on Day Five) of discussing how two themes interact with and build upon one another.
