In this lesson, readers will need to use their skills to define words and to analyze the details in the text to determine the central idea. Readers will also have to analyze how certain phrases contribute to the development of the ideas. To begin, readers are introduced to the Preamble and the First Amendment in a read aloud. Readers will reread the text with a partner or in a small group and begin to break it down to build understanding, while simultaneously working on the supporting text-dependent questions. Finally, students will independently complete the focus question. Student responses to the focus question should be collected and used as an assessment.
