This day focuses students’ look at the second major theme, gender, through a look at the choices Alcott made in structuring her text. Students look closely at a few passages, then go back into the text to look more broadly. Because Alcott is very clear about the characteristics of the male soldiers, students have the responsibility for describing that characterization themselves.
