Big Ideas: A function has a rule that determines the output (y-value) for any input (x-value). The input and output values can be written as an ordered pair, in a table, or as a domain and range. This lesson builds on students’ understanding of a function. The input are the x-coordinates of the ordered pairs, members of the domain. The output are the y-coordinates of the ordered pairs, members of the range. The task will model a real-world situation where students are provided a function to identify the rule and components of the function, as an ordered pair, in a table, and as the domain and range. The lesson builds towards writing and comparing properties of functions. Functions will be a fundamental concept in algebra and future high school math courses.
