Big Ideas: Quantitative data is data that can be measured or counted and reported numerically. We can represent quantitative data by constructing histograms and dotplots. Scales and bin widths are important for successful construction of histograms and dotplots and should be dictated by the data. Rescaling an axis can make graphs easier to read and interpret. The lesson builds on students’ previous work in 6th grade with quantitative data. The task will ask students to organize quantitative data, establish appropriate scales and/or bin widths, and graph the data using histograms and dotplots. Students should know that appropriate axis labels and titles are critical to a complete graph. Students should also realize that we can scale data sets with very large or very small values so the data is easier to represent graphically.
