Big Ideas: Two-dimensional figures can be organized in a hierarchy to show their relationship to one another. This lesson builds on students' understanding of how to sort figures into categories and subcategories based on attributes. It also addresses the relationship between those figures based on their attributes. In this lesson, students will create their own hierarchy of shapes and describe how shapes are related to each other within that hierarchy by creating a family tree. This lesson builds toward later work when students describe objects based upon geometric shapes and their properties and identify three-dimensional shapes based on two-dimensional cross-sections. Vocabulary: attribute, category, sub-category, hierarchy, properties, rules, two dimensional, classify Special Materials: Task Manipulatives (print out and cut these shapes for kids to sort)
