Big Ideas: Two intersecting number lines can be used to identify the location of points on a plane. Ordered pairs tell the distance a point is from the origin on the X and Y axis. This lesson builds on students' understanding of coordinate grids and locations of points on a plane by introducing ordered pairs as a more specific way of identifying points. In the launch, students learn that the order of the direction is important when identifying points. In the task they identify points on the coordinate grid using ordered pairs. These mathematical concepts build toward lessons when students will graph patterns on the coordinate grid and graph real world situations using ordered pairs. Vocabulary: origin, x-axis, y-axis, location, point, plane, horizontal, vertical, distance Special Materials: State Fair Task Sheet
