Are you passionate about improving educational opportunities for students everywhere? Are you curious about new technologies and do you experiment with them constantly? Do you like start-up and fast-growing environments?

Our well-funded, fast growing education technology start-up is looking for a front-end developer to help create beautiful, functional, and intuitive experiences for our users. This is an excellent opportunity if you are a software engineer who wants to be part of a small flexible team, takes total ownership of your code, and wants to make a difference. You will play a key role in building LearnZillion’s technology platform and shaping its future. You will also work closely with founders and senior members.

You should be creative, focused and technically skilled. You should learn new technologies fast and write clean object-oriented code regardless of the programming language you use.

We are building an online, collaborative, curricular platform with lessons, resources, assessments, and activities created by some of the country’s best teachers.

LearnZillion raised its initial funding through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, NewSchools Venture Fund, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Learn Capital, and others. LearnZillion is used by more than 100,000 teachers in school districts across the country.

Our products

Our first generation product provides lessons, assessments and assignments aligned to Common Core Standards for teachers and students. These are offered via the web and native iOS & Android mobile applications. Our plan is to further develop the product with a vision of multi-tenant Software-as-service (SaaS) model for schools and organizations. We will also be creating premium offerings and new channels.

We presently use: Ruby 1.9.3, Rails 3.2, Postgres, Bootstrap CSS, jQuery, Backbone.js, Haml, HTML5 and other open source technologies for the web application and native iOS and Android development platforms for Mobile.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop software for LearnZillion’s platform
  • Create and improve user experience through jQuery, Javascript, SCSS/Compass CSS and HTML5 technologies
  • Work on respective back-end to integrate your code seamlessly to the application

Qualifications

  • Experience with and interest in developing highly interactive applications using Javascript, jQuery, HTML5, and CSS
  • Strong knowledge or project experience in object-oriented technologies, particularly in web development frameworks like MVC
  • Experience in developing end-to-end web applications
  • Mobile applications development highly desired
  • Bachelor’s degree (a master’s is a plus)
  • Back-end experience in Ruby, Java, or PHP is a plus
  • Experience in using design tools like Adobe CS is a plus

  • Work on some front-end development to integrate your code seamlessly to the application

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (a master’s is a plus)
  • Strong knowledge or project experience in object-oriented technologies, particularly in MVC framework
  • Experience in developing web applications using Ruby, Java, C++, or PHP-frameworks and databases MySQL, or Postgres in a Linux type environment
  • Experience in API-centric, Web service, or Component based application development
  • Interest in and experiment with Open Source technologies
  • Experience in developing end-to-end web applications
  • Experience in front-end development in jQuery, HTML5, CSS a plus
